WASHINGTON – A number of lawyers from the tobacco industry met secretly with the Solicitor General Elena Kagan in an effort to avoid the government’s policy to extract billions of dollars from companies that illegally hid the dangers of smoking.

These comments were made in the observation of the Associated Press recently, as quoted okezone, in Jakarta, Sunday (17/1/2010). Four tobacco companies that control nearly 90 percent of retail cigarette sales United States (U.S.), have until February 19 to persuade local governments to bring the case to the Supreme Court.

In 2006, a judge ruled that a number of prominent tobacco industry hid the dangers of smoking for decades. Although the court said the government was not entitled to sue fresh funds worth USD280 billion in past profits or the equivalent of $ 14 billion for a national campaign to curb smoking.

As part of an effort to convince the government that these measures will not spread to the Supreme Court, the tobacco companies, may have to try hard in talks to local judges, to overthrow a number of industries involved in extortion in the past it.
